I was the Australian Assistant Team Manager with the Australian Boxing Team in Papua New Guinea 1997 for the Oceania Games. There was political unrest. I remember we were on stand bye to evacuate at any time due to a take over bid of the Prime Minister. We were escorted to the fight venues by armored guards and curfews were placed and we were confined to our hotel, 5 minutes from the airport, our bags had to be packed at all times. The team won 15 medals great effort with all the violence/unrest going on around us.

Well I deceided last Wednesday that I would enter the Archibald Portrait Prize an Elite Australian Portrait Competition the winner receiving $30,000 I worked all through the night to complete it as it had to be at the couriers by 12pm on the Thursday, for delivery to Sydney on Friday ready for judging the following week. I don't see portraiture in traditional terms so I used fragments of my life to create this work simply titled Steve Oatway 2007.

Hi Steve!

Your work is crazy cool! Sorry, I am not a potential buyer, just a fellow artist. I know you must get tons of mail from admiring fans, but if I HAD to write anyway. Believe me, it is entirely out of my hands at this point.

So…. Anyway, a couple of days ago I was checking out the current Monkdogs Urban Art exhibition online. I am thinking of entering their next international juried show in November, so I wanted to see what kind of art they actually show. I found you under their list of artists next to a thumbnail of babydoll head art…. Which interestingly, is right up my alley.

Artistic curiosity compelled me to search you out on the Internet, and that is how I came across your fantastic website. What began as a quick little Internet diversion became more of a lengthy excursion. Your website sucked me in and I just found it very difficult to leave. Aside from your great art, I found your movies to be particularly outrageous and entertaining. Oh, and your blog/diary entries… very, very funny…

Everything about you… your art, your website, your appearance, your persona, your macabre sense of humor, your apparent vitality and your seemingly fearless and uninhibited approach to art makes complete sense to me.

Wow! I am happy to know for certain now, that I am not alone on this planet. Thank you for putting yourself “out there”. I am sure you have inspired a lot of artists to just make the kind of art they want to make. I so appreciate artists that do exactly that … even if they know that it won’t sell. I am that type of artist. There is a raw truthfulness in creating art that has no potential market.

(Heh heh. Who am I kidding? Truthfulness my ass! That’s just shear stupidity).

Anyway Steve, I just had to tell you that you ROCK! If I have any luck with getting into the Monkdogs exhibition, I’ll drop you a line.

PEACE,

Julie

Steve,
how`s 9 out of 10 things going ? I didn`t ask how`s every things going because it`s impossible to to get everything flowing smoothly. I have just discovered your site and I am inspired by it. Being 51 years old and a bit new on the computer scene , I just happened to dial in junkart and was amazed at how much of it is out there. I am a bit of a hermit and don`t watch very much T V so I am not that informed with all that`s going on in the world. I have made a couple of pieces of junkart myself and have some good ideas for some more sculptures later. I have contacted you because I think we have a few things in common . It seems to me you have a Christian leaning although I may have read that wrong , I have battled with drug use for years and have been in the bike scene a bit . Your phone number starts with 08 so I guess you must be in W.A. I am married with 3 kids and live in Collie. I realizes you must be a busy man and now that you have hit the big time everyone wants to seek you out . Being an artist or just addressing our artistic side in song ,dance or paint is fun and more people should tap into the fun factor. I congratulate you for promoting fun .
